Immigration and the United States

Welcome to the 2010 Border Patrol blog group’s blog, Breaking Borders! This blog is about the current immigration policies in the United States (as well as some historical and foreign affairs) and analyzing a few political cartoons on the issues. We don’t want to put our opinion into our analysis, but rather, state all of the facts and/or media effects theories related to the individual cartoons.

Ever since the United States was founded, immigration has been major issue. The word "immigration" is often used lightly, but in truth it covers a broad range of our history including everything from those who traveled from Europe and founded our country, to the immigration rush of the early 20th century, to the highly contested racial laws being overturned in Arizona today.  Through this blog, we aim to see every angle of the issue but especially to focus on what is happening "here and now".

Our main goal: To apply media effects theories, media literacy concepts, and journalism ethics to an analysis of editorial cartoons depicting the controversy in the U.S. regarding undocumented workers, and to identify and to analyze the “stories” being told about race, ethnicity and immigrants by editorial cartoonists.
